Cotton is a natural cellulose fiber — breathable, absorbent, and easy to sew, which is why it anchors quilting, casual apparel, and crafts. Our cotton collection spans quilting cottons (44 to 45 inches wide, the quilting standard), poplin and broadcloth for shirting and crafts, canvas and duck for tote bags and upholstery-weight projects, lawn for lightweight apparel, gauze for soft layered garments, and muslin for mock-ups and backdrops. Widths run 44 to 60 inches depending on type. Most are 100% cotton and machine washable, with expected shrinkage of a few percent on the first wash — pre-washing is standard practice. Typical uses are quilting, apparel, home sewing, crafts, and theatrical muslin. Lawn is the fine, smooth cotton for summer blouses; gauze is softer and more textured for relaxed garments. Canvas weight is graded by ounces — heavier duck suits upholstery and outdoor projects. Cotton fabrics are priced from $3.95 per yard, with full bolts at wholesale pricing for quilt shops, makers, and manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

Will cotton fabric shrink?
Expect a few percent shrinkage on the first wash with 100% cotton. Pre-washing before cutting is standard practice. We definitely suggest prewashing all cottons to avoid sizing issues.
What is the difference between quilting cotton and poplin?
Quilting cotton (44–45″ wide) is a medium plain weave for patchwork; poplin is a finer, smoother weave often used for shirting. Our 58 inch broadcloth is the best quilting cotton available because of its extra width.
What is cotton canvas used for?
Tote bags, aprons, upholstery-weight projects, and outdoor goods — anywhere a sturdy, heavy plain weave is needed. Cotton Canvas Stripes are also very popular for outdoor decor and tenting designs.
Is your cotton pre-shrunk?
No — assume untreated cotton and pre-wash before cutting, especially for garments. Even claimed Preshrunk cottons shrinks after wash. We always suggest washing before creating patterns and cutting the product.
Do you sell cotton fabric wholesale?
Yes — My Textile Fabric has multiple cotton fabrics available in full bolts at wholesale pricing for quilt shops and manufacturers, with free US shipping on orders over $50. **New FAQs (5) — proposed:**
How do I keep my white cotton from turning yellow over time?
Skip chlorine bleach — it actually yellows 100% cotton over time and weakens the fibers. Use oxygen bleach or just hot water and sunshine, which brightens cotton naturally. We've had customers bleach a white cotton garment repeatedly and wonder why it looks dingy; the bleach was the problem.
Can I use quilting cotton for a dress, or is it too stiff?
Quilting cotton works for structured dresses — shift dresses, fit-and-flare skirts, anything with body. It won't drape like a shirting poplin, so skip it for anything flowy or bias-cut. Here's the honest tradeoff: quilting cotton is easy to sew and holds its shape, but a full skirt in it can stand out like a bell instead of falling softly.
How many times should I pre-wash cotton before cutting?
Wash and dry cotton the same way you'll treat the finished piece, once, before cutting — that's enough for most projects. Use hot water and a hot dryer if you want maximum shrinkage out of the way up front. The mistake we see is pre-washing in cold and then drying the garment hot — the cotton shrinks after it's already sewn, and the seams pucker.
Will my home sewing machine handle heavy cotton canvas?
Most home machines struggle with heavyweight cotton canvas — the needle deflects and stitches skip on thick seams. Use a denim needle, go slowly, and hammer thick seam intersections flat before sewing. We've seen customers burn out a motor forcing canvas through a basic machine; for bags and totes, sew fewer layers or choose a mid-weight canvas instead.
Why does my cotton shirt wrinkle so much — can I do anything about it?
100% cotton wrinkles — that's the fiber, and no wash cycle changes it. Press with steam while it's slightly damp for the smoothest finish, and hang garments immediately out of the dryer. If you want less wrinkling, a cotton-poly blend is the honest answer; pure cotton trades wrinkle resistance for breathability and softness. ---
