Sequin fabric is made of small plastic discs — sequins, also called paillettes — sewn or heat-set onto a mesh or knit ground in overlapping rows. Our collection includes allover sequin on non-stretch mesh for structured garments and decor, stretch sequin on spandex grounds for dancewear and fitted dresses, and reversible two-tone sequins that flip color when brushed. Typical uses are dance costumes, evening gowns, prom dresses, stage backdrops, tablecloths, and event drapery. Most sequin fabrics are 52 to 54 inches wide on polyester grounds. Because the embellishment adds weight and the disc edges can catch, sequin fabric usually needs a lining, and sharp edges along cut lines are normal. Because sequin fabric is heavy, allow extra ease in garments and sew with strong thread. Sequin edges along cut lines are sharp until bound or lined, so plan the finishing before you cut. Sequin fabrics are priced from $3.99 per yard, reflecting the embellishment work, with full bolts at wholesale pricing for dancewear makers, costume shops, and event planners.

Frequently asked questions

Do sequin fabrics need lining?
Usually yes. The sequin edges can scratch skin, so garments are lined; decor pieces like tablecloths typically are not needed.
What is the difference between sequins and paillettes?
They are the same thing — paillette is the French term. Both refer to the small discs sewn onto fabric. We offer a Fish Scale Paillette sequins that comes in multiple colors. Paillette Sequins discs are about 9mm in size
Can you wash sequin fabric?
Spot cleaning or gentle hand washing is safest. Machine washing can loosen discs; always check the specific product. Taffeta Sequins tends to wash better in machines but again, dry cleaning or spot cleaning or gentle hand washing is highly suggest for delicate sequins fabrics.
How do you cut sequin fabric?
Cut from the back side along the ground fabric, and remove sequins from seam allowances to reduce bulk and needle breakage. Running the sequins or beads through your sewing machine will break needles and extend sewing times. To avoid breaking needles, we suggest removing the sequins/beads from the direction of sewing by hand.
Do you sell sequin fabric wholesale?
Yes — My Textile Fabric sells Sequins Fabric in full bolts at wholesale pricing for dancewear makers and event planners, with free US shipping on orders over $50. **New FAQs (5) — proposed:**
I've never sewn sequins — what should I expect?
Expect broken needles. Sewing through sequin discs snaps standard needles, so we recommend a heavy-duty or jeans needle, slow machine speed, and removing sequins from the seam allowances first with small pliers. The honest tradeoff: hand-basting sequin seams takes forever, but hand-basting is the difference between a clean seam and a pile of snapped needles.
Can I serge sequin fabric?
You can, but sequins dull serger blades fast — many sewists finish sequin seams with a wide zigzag on a regular machine instead. If the serger is non-negotiable, remove the sequins from the seam allowance first and expect to replace the blades sooner than usual. The honest math: a single sequin dress can take the edge off a fresh set of blades.
Will sequin fabric look the same color under event lighting?
Not exactly — sequins are reflective, so a gold sequin fabric can read champagne under warm uplighting and brassy under cool LEDs. We recommend ordering a swatch and checking the swatch under lighting similar to the venue's before committing to yardage. For dancewear and stage costumes, that light-shift is usually the whole point. My Textile Fabric also carries multiple Rainbow Sequins Fabrics that reflect color under lights differently.
Sequins are falling off my fabric — is this defective?
A few loose sequins are normal, not a defect. Sequin fabric sheds a little in shipping and handling, so we recommend shaking the fabric out outdoors before cutting and saving the fallen sequins for repairs. If discs are coming off in handfuls, or bare patches are showing in the ground fabric, that's different — contact us with photos. Usual fix for this is to sew lose ends on the back side of the sequins fabric.
Can I iron sequin fabric?
No — the sequins are plastic and melt under a hot iron, and melted sequins don't un-melt. We recommend hanging the garment and steaming from several inches away to relax wrinkles in the ground fabric. If a seam must be pressed, press from the wrong side with a press cloth, keeping the iron off the sequined face entirely. Also if you are going to risk washing and drying, please use extreme low heat and low tumble to avoid damaging the fabric extensively. ---
