Italian Hard net is a very Stiff Net that is used for under dresses and skirts to puff and our allow the dress to hold its shape. This Net is much stronger and more stiff than the traditional Hard Net

The netting is perfect for crinolines. Very stiff and holds its shape.

I bought this originally to find a replacement for buckram to make hats because its becoming increasingly hard to find in wide widths. I thought if it didnt work for that it would work for historical costumes. The quality, stiffening and support of the crinoline exceeded my expectations and this is a wonderful substitute.

How much stiffer is this than regular crinoline?

Noticeably stiffer — that's the selling point. This Italian hard net is described as much stronger and stiffer than traditional hard net, made specifically to puff out skirts and hold a dress's shape. If regular crinoline gave you a limp petticoat, this is the upgrade. The tradeoff: at this stiffness it can scratch bare legs, so most sewists sandwich it between a lining and the outer skirt.

Is 54 inches wide enough for a full circle-skirt petticoat?

Yes, for most builds. At 54 inches wide and only about 1.5 oz per linear yard, you can gather several layers without the waistband turning into a brick. Very hard netting does the lifting, so you need fewer layers than with soft tulle — a real yardage savings. We'd cut one test ruffle first, though; 'very stiff' reads differently to every sewist.
